Mary Jane Amaya

I am Mary Jane Amaya and the objective of my project, Amaya Summer School, is that your child improve his English as well as come back home with lasting positive memories of experiences that will help him throughout his life.

Mary Jane Amaya, director

I have been a pedagogic consultant of bilingual projects for more than 25 years, giving talks, preparing and instructing teachers as a teacher-trainer and being a teacher. I have a true passion for my profession and love working with teachers and children.  Through my work, I have launched and promoted language immersion projects in schools and have played an important role in giving a great number of students the opportunity to get onboard the multilingual train of modernity in which frontiers all but disappear. It has been an exciting road and, sometimes, the speed with which all of these changes have taken place has been surprising and frenetic. I see more and more that children and adolescents have better opportunities.

On the other hand, I have also come to realize that in this desire to have them advance, children have little time to learn in depth and develop their creativity and communication, which is of the essence because the world needs new creative solutions to today’s problems. They need time to reflect about the direction they want to take in their lives. Everything is moving too fast.

PARENT AND STUDENT OPINIONS

Joaquín and Nerea participated in the first program.  They were only 8 and 11 years old the first time. It was very difficult for us to make the decision because it was the first time that that it was offered and it was their first time “alone” abroad.  We did not make a mistake and everything was perfectly planned and organized. Our children were happy the whole time and so were we because we received daily updates through the blog. We saw them have fun in the photos and Tracy would tell us everything they did and all the anecdotes that came up day by day.  It was as if we were living the experience with them. They had a great time (surfing, climbing, jumping, kayaking …) They came back more autonomous (with one or two recipes learnt) and their level of English improved noticeably without them feeling that it had taken a great deal of effort. Joaquin and Nerea went back a second time two years later.

Thank you Mary Jane and Tracy for such a positive experience.

Encarni (program 2013 and 2015)

My son had just turned 9 years old when I decided he needed to live this experience in Ireland.  My family was not in agreement because they thought he was too young to let him go away from home, go abroad without anyone who would go with him.  They meant “no one from his family” but, for me, my only guarantee that he would have a great holiday was precisely that he would be going with a person that I knew would treat him as if he were going to my brother’s home or with my sister-in-law’s and who would take care of him as his own family would. The program is a holiday in a family atmosphere. They enjoy the summer and they learn to be self-sufficient outside of their home in the company and care of a person that I fully trust. The following year, he had decided on his own that he wanted to repeat. This year, if it’s possible, he will go back. And so on and so forth until he decides to finish with this stage in his life.

Thank you , Mary Jane.

The camp in Ireland was a great experience because I met new people, Irish as well as Spanish, and I practiced and improved my English.

In the morning, we went to the camp with many other people and we did activities such as surfing, climbing… and many more things.  In the afternoons, we had fun classes in English and we did experiments. At night, we cooked and had free time. On weekends, we went on excursions to towns, went to the cinema and did many other activities.

I had a great time, and it was a great experience that I will never forget.

Maite (went 2 consecutive summers when I was 9 and 10 years old)

Nowadays, the availability of trips for children to English-speaking countries offered is enormous and, as parents, what most worried us at the time of letting our children go abroad, was not that they learnt English but rather that they learnt English in the right environment.  Mary Jane, whom we have known for many years and in whom we had full confidence, proved to be not only and excellent teacher but a was like a mother for them during their stay , especially for our 9 year old daughter for whom it was the first time away from us. The children that participated were also key in making their days at camp more fun and worthwhile because they shared everything and always in good harmony.  Without a doubt, they learnt English and became more fluent and enjoyed themselves with all the activities that the Irish camp organized. To these times of leisure were added many learning moments with Mary Jane which were also enjoyable and useful because that is how she teaches children, using, for instance, cooking, experiments, videos, games, etc.

Maite Briones

This program is totally worth recommending, especially for the first times that children go abroad because the groups are small and the children receive personalized attention at all times.

The fact that they are mixed with Irish children in the activities facilitates the language learning process, their capacity to relate and integrate in the customs of the country.

They are accompanied by trustworthy people who make this experience unforgettable  both from a formative and personal growth point of view.

When I went to Ireland, it was an unforgettable experience with all the people that I met.  One of the things that I liked the best, was learning to surf and you learn a lot of English.

I also loved to help prepare food with everyone doing different things.

It was an unforgettable adventure.

Cristina Gomez-Villalba – 10 years old when I went

What made me decide to choose this camp was the personalized attention it offered.  I do not believe that there are many like this one. The organizer, Mary Jane, is an American teacher, and she combines a many years of experience and keeps the groups small.  She travels with the children and she lives with them in a house near the camp, as if they were a family, which is ideal because they are very young. She is in charge of preparing meals… delicious meals!!! My daughter loved the food in spite of the fact that she has to eat a gluten-free diet, which did not pose a problem.  I also like that the camp is for Irish children. The only group of Spaniards was ours. English is the only language used reason why my daughter’s English improved greatly. This was the first objective achieved!! In addition, this experience helps them to have a more globalized outlook, to know that there are other children with other cultures and interests some of which are the same and others different.  They come back very happy with the experience because they have a fun time, do sports, surf, activities, excursions and all in a secure family atmosphere.

Ana Estella (2016)

Fantastic experience. The children learn English while they play, do incredible experiments, learn to cook or even windsurf.

Mary Jane is a fantastic English teacher who is able to get the most out of each child, with a lot of affection and patience she helps them become more independent and adapt in record time to a country with very different customs to ours.

For our two children, it was a wonderful experience and, without a doubt, it is a sure bet!
